A Tyranid Prime is the cheapest HQ choice for a Tyranid army. It is, essentially, just a Tyranid Warrior, although one would normally be expected to convert it in some fashion or give it a distinctive paintjob to make it stand out.

In background terms, it is a Tyranid Warrior that has been genetically enhanced to possess a more intimate connection with the Hive Mind. In game terms, it's a slightly souped-up Warrior with the same weapons and upgrade options (so he can be winged). He is also the only Tyranid HQ choice that is an independent character rather than a monstrous creature, so he can hide from enemy fire in other units.

Units do not "become" Prime. He is a distinct unit choice in his own right.
