By far the best place to start is with the "Assault on Black Reach " boxed set. This is essentially a self-contained mini-version of the game that comes with two small armies (space marines and orks), all the rules, dice, measuring sticks and a booklet of introductory scenarios to get you started.

It's one box, it's not too expensive and you can get a good idea of whether the hobby is something you want to do or not. A lot of fun can be got just from assembling and painting the miniatures and the game itself is very sociable and pretty easy to pick up.

Certainly, those of us who get into the hobby in a big way are all pretty geeky - I know I am - but the boxed set alone is great beer and pretzels game and once you've started, you'll find that the temptation to add more models, bigger tanks and more complicated rules to the game is almost overwhelming.
Warhammer 40k is called a Wargame. You are in control of one entire army, and you opponent(s) is in charge of another.

Each army is assembled using a point-buy system, where different units and abilities cost different points. Both armies are assembled using the same total so in theory they are equal. Though it is highly likely that one side will have more, cheaper units, while the other has fewer, but tougher, units.

You put the armies on your 'battlefield' which is usually a table with a few obstacles on it to represent terrain. You then take turns moving and attacking with your units, usually until one side is completely wiped out or surrenders. Rulers are heavily involved, since units move on unmarked table a specific distance each turn.

The actual rules of the game are FAR to complex to go into here; there is a reason the core rulebook is over 100 pages long, but that is the basic idea. What is warhammer 40k and how do you play it?

I've never been into the games because they are too complicated for me but I paint a few minis.
Ok For one They Aren't Toys They Are Model Kits You Put Them Together And Paint Them. Second You Play Against Other People In Hobby Shops. And three Why Do You Care If it's Nerdy...? Is being Nerdy Going To Kill You? And Finally Look At Games Workshop WebsiteWhat is warhammer 40k and how do you play it?
