8'x8' will leave you struggling to reach the middle of the table! The US standard for 2000 point PvP games (i.e. 4000 points total on the table) is 4'x8'. The UK standard (which plays a more concentrated game) is 4'x6'. 8x8 is good. get two sheets of plywood and have fun putting down some terrain features. if you us hasps to connect it you can break it back down for storage and if your careful with your terrain and your connectors you can make it so you can put it together different ways. this will change the face of the land and even the dimensions of play. end to end you have a field 16 feet long and four feet wide. and as it is modular in design you can expand it when you want to to make it any shape and dimension you like. set it up on sawhorses or down on the ground. Have fun with it. its the whole point of the game, right?
I appreciate your view, though with good terrain (hills, rivers, a canyon can be fun) you can lay ambushes, dig in, or try to blitz. 8X8 is a decent size, but it might be a little large for only 1000 points, the tournament standard in my area is 4X6, or 6X6 depending on how large you want it to be and how much/what kind of terrain is available. On anything larger than 6X6 with 1000 points, the battle will be heavily determined by shooting and may not be as well balanced or enjoyable.
