For a beginner on a budget there's no question: space marines are the place to start.



First of all, they are the definitive army of the 41st Millennium: the iconic figure of the Imperium of Man. There's loads of exciting background, stirring imagery and deep, dark history to wade through. There's masses of choice when it comes to paint schemes, as almost any heraldry you can imagine is possible, and because there's lots of armour they are easy for beginners to paint. You can choose a canonical chapter or make up your own.



Secondly, they are easy to get a grip of on the tabletop. Their codex is well-designed and offers plenty of options and possibilities, and finetuning your army to perfection will absorb many a pleasant hour. Their special rules allow you to bypass some of the most frustrating elements of the game for new players, whilst still being entertaining for veterans (I ran a space marine army for over 20 years).



Finally, they are easily the most cost-effective army to build. You get a small starter army in the Assault on Black Reach boxed set that represents a strong core (you also get a small ork army to fight them, but orks aren't quite as forgiving on new players and the starter force isn't quite as ideal as the marine one) and adding additional forces is easy. As a father of 2 boys who are very into this i have a bit of info .if this is for 40k then go with either the ork or the Space maine orks were just upgraded and they are pretty awsome now. but you can also do well with the space marines my son just got the black reach set and then used the space marines then traded the orks for more marines. Also shop on ebay there are some pretty good armys on there as well
