How to use a Warhammer 40k Codex or Rulebook to determine points?

I want to see how many points my army is up to. I'm new to the game still, so what number in the book do I look at to find out how many points each character is worth? How to use a Warhammer 40k Codex or Rulebook to determine points?
I'm sorry about the idiotic answers you've been receiving.

It does somewhat depend on the codex you're using. Older codexes combined units special rules and background with the army list. Newer ones separate these out into separate sections.

Assuming you've got a newer codex, look for the "Army List" section. By each unit entry, you'll see "COST:" and a number. For example, in Codex: Chaos Space Marines (chosen because I have it open in front of me), under "Troops" it lists "Chaos Space Marines" and says "COST: 15 points each". So one Chaos Space Marine model costs 15 points. The unit entry then goes on to specify the minimum and maximum unit sizes and the points costs of upgrades and additions to the squad.

You add up the cost of your units and the total is the "cost" of your army. Most games are played at 1500 points and this will generally occupy about two or three hours of gameplay.

Note that a typical army for standard missions will generally require you to have at least one HQ choice and at least two Troops choices. How to use a Warhammer 40k Codex or Rulebook to determine points?
Excessive title ban imo
