What is the difference between warhammer and warhammer 40,000 tabletop games?

I was just wondering what the difference was and which a new player may enjoy more. What is the difference between warhammer and warhammer 40,000 tabletop games?
Warhammer Fantasy is set on a single planet and includes the following races: The Empire (humans), High Elves, Dark Elves, Wood Elves, Dwarfs, Undead, Orcs and Goblins, Vampires, Lizardmen, Skaven, Chaos. The game is played with 'regiments' of miniatures. Armies will have infantry, cavalry, heroes, siege engines.

Warhammer 40000 is set in our galaxy in the 41st millennium. In the tabletop game there is one main human faction called The Imperium which is broken down into the Imperial Guard (ordinary humans), Space Marines (genetically engineered super soldiers) and the Inquisition (witch hunters, daemon hunters, alien hunters). Also there are many alien races such as Eldar (space elves), Orks, Tau (high tech aliens), Necrons (ancient robots that want to harvest everyone鈥檚 souls), Dark Eldar, Tyranids (aliens from another galaxy that want to eat everything) and Chaos. The game is played with squads, tanks, APCs, artillery, aircraft, and heroes.

As for what a new player might enjoy more it's all down to personal taste. If you want something similar to a Tolkien type fantasy world that鈥檚 a little darker go for warhammer fantasy. However if you like science fiction then warhammer 40000 is for you.

They are both fairly easy to get into but you should go to your local GW store first and talk to some of the staff there as well as play a few mini battles with the store minis to get a feel for which game is right for you. What is the difference between warhammer and warhammer 40,000 tabletop games?
if your looking for a slower game with more tactics and strategy then go for fantasy, 40k is a quicker more explosve game, not always so much about tactics.

Youngers players tend to enjoy 40k more.
