There are no "best units" per se, mostly to maintain balance. What there are, are units that are hard to counter. The most deadly unit of space marines that i have run across is a unit of jump assault marines with Shrike. Shrike lets them infiltrate and gives fleet to all units. So you infiltrate them and now you have a unit with a guaranteed assault range of 19" and a max of 24". put some power weapons in there and you have a formidable fast assault unit.

By themselves, Terminators are quite powerful and have a plethora of rules that let them break every rule in the book. They can move and fire any weapon (even heavy) and with a 2+ armor and 5+ (3+ with storm shields) invuln, they are pretty resilient.

You really just need to experiment and find out what works best for you. What is the Best Warhammer Space Marine?
Arguably, the single most powerful unit choice is one of ten Assault Terminators with thunder hammers and storm shields delivered by deep strike (ideally using a locator beacon). With a 2+ save and 3+ invulnerable save, they are very hard to put down, can destroy infantry and vehicles with equal ease and can be deployed exactly where you need them, when you need them. Of course, they're also very expensive, but - my goodness! - they'll give your opponent a horrible, horrible shock. Even if they suffer bad dice, they can cause massive disruption to an enemy's battle plans.
