In Warhammer 40k how do you know how many shots you can take with each model?

I'm new to 40k but i know most of the rules, but the one thing i don't get is how many shots each model can take per attack and assault phase. I know that it varies between the assault and attack phase but what i want to know is how to tell how many shots a unit can take as a default such as how many a dreadnought can take or how many a normal space marine can take. Is it just a matter of the stats or what? Someone please answer! In Warhammer 40k how do you know how many shots you can take with each model?
Each model may shoot ONE weapon ONCE.

That's the simple answer.

However, each weapon has a unique statline, that includes the number of dice you roll for each shot. So an "Assault 2" weapon, for example is fired once, but you roll 2 dice. A "Heavy 3" weapon means you roll 3 dice. You score a hit for each successful dice roll.

Rapid Fire weapons are a constant source of confusion, even though it's really pretty simple. If you shoot up to half the weapon's range, you can roll two dice. If you shoot between half the range and the full range, you can roll one.

Vehicles - such as dreadnoughts - are a further complication, as the number of weapons they can shoot depends upon how far they have moved. Refer to your rulebook for details.

You cannot shoot in the Assault phase. No, not even with an "Assault" weapon. In Warhammer 40k how do you know how many shots you can take with each model?
well if you are playing regular ultra-marines just look in your codex. if you have a boltgun and are within 12 inchs of an enemy model, you will get 2 shots with each person within that 12 inches, but you will be unable to assault. just look at what you want to put on each unit, say a stormbolter which is strength 4 armor pen 5 with assault 2. this means you get two shows with the weapon and can assault after you have fired as long as you are within 6 inchs. as for assaults. lets take your assault space marines with jump packs. You will get 1 attack or each unit who is not a sgt. the sgt will get two attacks base. however when you assault you will get another attack for doing so. so now the normal guys have 2 attacks and the sgt has 3. plus if they are duel wielding normal weapons say a chainsword and a bolt pistol, they will now have 3 attacks when in close combat. If you are like me and have a sgt with a powerfist and a storm shield, he will not gain this attack, instead he will just have 3 attacks for assaulting. hope this was helpful!
