What is the standard/normal amount of points in a Warhammer 40k battle?

I'm getting space marines so i'd like to know how many points I should build my army to for battles. What is the standard/normal amount of points in a Warhammer 40k battle?
It depends on what size and length of battle you want to play.

A 500 point battle will be over in an hour or less (if you know the rules well, you can do 500 points in 40 minutes).

A 1000 point battle will probably take about 1.5-2 hours.

My club tends to focus on 1500 point battles as the standard in both 40k and WFB, and these will usually occupy the time between the 1830 start time and the 2200 kick-out time very neatly, allowing for setting-up and packing away.

2000 point games will take a bit longer, although if you both know the rules very well and are playing for speed, you can do it in three hours.

Games of more than 2000 points generally need at least an entire day allocated to them, whilst games with 3000 points or more on each side (moving into the realms of "WH40k: Apocalypse", here) will take up a weekend.

I was chatting with someone yesterday who had 10,000 points of Empire for WFB and another with 5,000 points of Space Marines. This didn't mean that they played games of this size on a regular basis (or ever!) but rather than they could field large or small regiments of every sort of troop type, warmachine and vehicle, tailoring their army lists as they felt moved and according to their opponent. What is the standard/normal amount of points in a Warhammer 40k battle?
between 750-2000.

i find that 1000, 1500, and 2000 are the best.
